About Prairienet Newsgroups

Prairienet's news server news.prairienet.org carries over 30,000 USENET newsgroups covering a wide variety of topics.

The local news hierarchy cmi.* serves Champaign-Urbana and East Central Illinois. cmi.* newsgroups are available to UIUC and to any area Internet Service Providers. ['cmi' is derived from the designation for Willard airport, ChaMpaIgn]

The simplest way to access the most popular local newsgroups via the Web.

Full access to all newsgroups on our news server news.prairienet.org is available to Prairienet members in either of the following ways:

  • You will be using it automatically if you access Prairienet Classic via regular dialup or telnet.
  • If you are dialing into PPPrairienet, you will be able read newsgroups with a newsreader installed on your home computer. (Configure your software so that your news server is set to news.prairienet.org)
  • If you have Internet access through another ISP, you can access news.prairienet.org via authentication, i.e. logging in with your Prairienet username and password.

Champaign-Urbana Newsgroups (cmi.*)

Prairienet members who have set up the newsreader in their Web browser, should be able to read the following newsgroups by following the link accompanying the name of the group.
