Email Setup

Prairienet offers various email options.

  • Our full-featured Webmail lets you log and check your email anywhere you have access to the Web.
  • You can use SSH or dialup to log in to Prairienet Classic use the text-based email client PINE [off-site link] from the Prairienet Classic menu or the UNIX shell.
  • You can set up your Windows or Mac email program like Outlook or Outlook Express, Eudora, or Apple Mail.
  • You may request to have your email forwarded to another address. Please email with specifics.
The following general information applies to the setup of PC or Mac email program, as well as handheld devices such as PDAs and smartphones.

If the email program asks for...
then enter the following:
Your username, user id, or login Your Prairienet username
Your password Your Prairienet password
Your email address Your username@prairienet.org email address
Your incoming mail server pop.prairienet.org
Your outgoing SMTP server The outgoing SMTP server of your computer's Internet Service Provider (ISP).

If you are using Prairienet's dialup access, then use mail.prairienet.org

Your security settings:
Secure Socket Layers (SSL)
Enable Secure Socket Layers (SSL) for your incoming mail server only.

Note: some ISPs require you to authenticate with their outgoing SMTP server in order to send mail. This means that you need to provide the username and password that you have with that ISP, not your Prairienet username and password. Please see your ISP's Web site for details on setup with your email program.

Microsoft Outlook 2002

Email settings for Outlook are managed under Tools on the Outlook Menu Bar. Under Email Accounts, select View or change existing e-mail accounts, and select your existing Prairienet email account. Alternatively, select Add a new e-mail account.

The following settings should be configured in order to check your email properly on Prairienet:
  1. Under Server Type, choose either POP3 if you plan to keep all your email on your local drive, or IMAP if you plan to keep all your email on the Prairienet mail server. (If you choose the latter, you will be able to view all your email later using other clients, but you will need to be careful not to exceed your mail quota.)
  2. Under Internet E-mail Settings, you will need to enter in the server information listed above in addition to your username and password information.
  3. After filling out account information, click on More Settings under the "Internet E-mail Settings" window. Select the Advanced tab and place a check mark next to the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) under the Incoming Server section.
